International Fest was a big hit on Saturday, April 27th, with twenty five tables set up sharing the many cultures of people here in the Nashoba community. The event ran from 12-3 pm, and the time was filled with games, music, and food. To learn more information, The Regional had the opportunity to interview international club president Hadassah Kamau.
Hadassah’s inspiration for the festival derived from an International Night held by her elementary school in Taunton that celebrated diversity. She told club advisor, Mrs. Hera, about her idea and they were able to get the ball rolling. From there, International Fest was born.
Similarly to last year’s festival, there were twenty two tables displaying food and information about various countries in the cafeteria. However, games were a new addition to the program. Five tables were set up in the lower gym displaying lively games from places across the world such as Kenya, Indonesia, and Japan.
A mix of staff, students, and family members in the district were present at the festival. Local residents not directly involved with Nashoba also showed up. Hadassah’s favorite part was seeing everyone, attendees and presenters alike, come together and have fun learning about different backgrounds. “We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback,” she commented.
As for the future of the festival? Hadassah is crossing her fingers that next year there will be better and higher quality microphones for use. But aside from physical objects, she would love for the festival to one day become as much of a staple at Nashoba as events like homecoming or prom: “ I really hope that the club continues to live on and doesn’t fall back,” she says.
International fest not only recognizes individual cultures, but celebrates all of the beautiful diversity that makes Nashoba the tight-knit community that it is. To try different food, learn something new, and bond with others, definitely make a point to attend International Fest next spring.
