Rota Spring Farms opened back up this past weekend for the ice cream season. Rota’s is kicking off its 26th season. Located in Sterling, Rotas has over 50 award-winning flavors as well as multiple specials every month. This month’s specials are Black Raspberry Oreo and Lemon Dream. Both are very popular flavors and will only be available until the end of March. Lemon Dream is a lemon-based ice cream with vanilla Oreos, and it is one of the best sellers that Rota’s has to offer.
As I mentioned before, Rota has specials every month to highlight the season. Some of the best specials are pumpkin and pumpkin Oreo, mint Oreo, key lime pie, and the fan favorite lavender. The only way to describe lavender is to say it tastes exactly like how it smells, you will have to try it for yourself. And for those unable to have dairy ice cream, Rotas experimented with vegan ice cream last year and it proved to be a huge success. This is made with almond milk and features flavors like chocolate (all year long), strawberry, peach and pumpkin.
A signature Rota Spring creation is the Jack Frost. Similar to a McFlurry or Blizzard it is a soft-serve base with your choice of topping. You can customize it however you like using either chocolate, vanilla, or twist as a base with toppings such as Oreos, Nestle Crunch, ButterFingers, gummy bears, and cookie dough just to name a few. Creations like banana splits which allow you to pick 2,3 or 6 scoops of ice cream with any toppings of your choice is just another way Rota Spring Farm allows its customers to express their creative freedom.
The best flavor that you can get is the Coffee Oreo. I’m not usually a fan of coffee ice cream but the blend that Rota’s uses is too good to pass up; the oreos compliment it perfectly adding a sweet touch to the ice cream. Coffee Oreo is also very versatile as it is one of the best flavors to get in a frappe. Some other great options for frappes are strawberry cheesecake and mint chip.
The ice cream at Rota Springs has always drawn large crowds each and every day, whether it is raining, snowing, or sunny. It has been voted in the top 20 ice cream stands in New England for multiple years in a row by the Boston Globe, as well as many other credited sources. This local ice cream spot attracts customers by making their ice cream in the store, with Larry the ice cream maker always present. Since the ice cream stand shares property with a farm stand there are cows and goats to feed and watch, as well as plenty of benches and tent space to enjoy your ice cream outside. Also, Rota’s has a farmstand that they fill up with freshly grown fruits and vegetables as well as their own grass-fed beef.
Rota’s also brings their grass-fed beef into the ice cream stand where they sell their famous roast beef subs and meatball subs made right in the store. In addition to these options, they sell award-winning chicken salad subs as well as hot dogs. Rota’s also doesn’t only sell ice cream, they sell frappes, coolers, freezes, and moolatas, as well as soft-serve ice cream, sherbert, sorbets, ice cream cakes, and pies.
