Think Pink, it’s October!

October is here and that means pink on pink on pink! All sports teams participate in pink nights, pink walks, and pink fundraisers all in support of breast cancer awareness and research during the month of October.

Soccer had their pink night game on October 1st against Leominster. There were lots of fans at the JV1 game, but the fundraising was done during halftime at the Varsity game. JV players walked around the bleachers asking for donations to breast cancer.

Senior, Courtney Aylaian, has participated in pink night for four years now. “I think supporting breast cancer as a whole immensely raises awareness. By dedicating the games to the cause it helps educate people about breast cancer when otherwise they might not think about it. By supporting the cause as a team it naturally forces us to become curious about it and want to learn more about it”, said Aylaian. The whole idea of raising awareness is spreading across the country.

Volleyballs pink night was on October 9th in the upper gym! Volleyballs JV1 and Varsity teams played Leominster for a great cause! The gym was all decked out with pink balloons, jerseys, balls, and more! Concessions consisted of pink baked goods that went to the breast cancer fund. The whole volleyball team also, just completed their walk for breast cancer on Sunday, October 4th where they walked all over Boston in support of breast cancer.

Mary Bussiere talked about how Breast cancer affects NGV, saying, “It brings us together because it’s such a sensitive topic that everyone takes to heart and we can all relate to something like that so we did a walk together in Boston, which our whole team alone raised 2,000 dollars,and it was just a great team bonding experience that I believe no one will ever forget. We also have a pink night, dedicated to breast cancer where all of the proceeds from baking goods go towards breast cancer research.”  NGV did a great job supporting breast cancer but there’s still more to come!

Field Hockey also participates in pink night events and fundraising for breast cancer throughout the month of October. Each year they sell pink shirts with a different design and all the funds go to breast cancer research. During their pink night game both the players and fans wear the shirts in support!

Averill Meininger talked about NFH’s breast cancer support, saying, “I think NFH is really great about supporting breast cancer awareness. We all go on the walk together and fund raise by selling our pink shirts. Each year the shirts have a different design. We also have a pink night game where we all wear our pink shirts instead of our jerseys and we try and get lots of people to come.” This year’s pink game is on October 19th at 7 pm so come support NFH on the turf and don’t forget to wear pink!

The boys wear pink too! All three football teams and the boys soccer team have taken part in supporting breast cancer this month. The football teams wear pink socks throughout the month of October while the boys soccer team host their own pink night game on the turf. Nashoba even put a breast cancer symbol on the field for everyone to see. The freshman team also played a game in honor of Michelle Farnsworth, on Saturday October 3rd, where every player wore blue sweatbands on their arms.
