In a surprising turn of events, Russel Wilson is set to join the Pittsburgh Steelers after a meeting, as he has begun to consider his future after it became clear that he would be cut from the Broncos. This decision creates a one-year deal between the Steelers and Wilson and allows him to compete with Steeler’s Quarterback Kenny Pickett this season. His departure from the Bronco’s became apparent after two unsuccessful seasons in Colorado. This signing creates an opportunity for a fresh start for Wilson following these last two seasons to prove he can still be a good option. Wilson posted a video to social media to confirm the reports of his signing to the Steeler tagging them in the post. This upcoming season will begin on March 13th, 2024.
It is reported that this deal will cost the Steelers $1.2 Million, and Wilson will also still affect the Bronco’s salary as they still owe him $39 Million. Wilson has experienced an unfavorable past two seasons with performance issues and being benched for the last two games of the season. The final decision to cut Wilson cost the Broncos $85 million in the team’s funds as a dead cap fund after taking him off the roster. He will be competing with Pickett who has started for the past two season’s on the Steeler’s but has struggled with issues of performance and injuries since being drafted. It will be interesting to see how these two quarterbacks perform in this upcoming season. Wilson did not appear to work well with Broncos head coach Sean Payton so it will be interesting to see how he works with the Steeler’s head coach Mike Tomlin.
The original trade for Wilson by the Broncos will go down in history as one of the worst financially as the lack of success brought upon the Broncos for this trade. They got Wilson in exchange for, two first-round draft picks, two second-rounders, a fifth-rounder, defensive tackle Shelby Harris, quarterback Drew Lock, and tight end Noah Fant.
I believe it will be interesting to see how this switch will affect both the Steelers and Wilson. The signing of Wilson to the Steelers will be intriguing to see if he can help the team to new heights in this upcoming season. In his NFL career, Wilson has 43,653 passing yards, 334 touchdowns, and 106 interceptions. NFL fans will be looking forward to next season to see if Wilson will bring a dynamic beneficial element to Pittsburgh’s offense.
