Elon Musk Says He Will Live on Mars

Wouldn’t it be cool to live on our smaller, redder, planetary neighbor? Elon Musk, founder, lead designer, and CEO of SpaceX, and co-founder, CEO, and product architect of Tesla, believes that there is a 70% chance that he will live on Mars in the near future. Musk also believes that there could be one million people living on Mars within the next 100 or so years.

Elon Musk believes it is possible to shuttle thousands of people between Earth and Mars between the next decade or so. “This is not about everyone moving to Mars, this is becoming multiplanetary,” Musk tells National Geographic. He believes that, in 40 – 100 years, Mars could be a “self-sustaining colony” of a million people.

Musk understands that his timeline sounds a bit far fetched, but who’s to say what we will accomplish in 100 years? The real question is why would we want to even live on Mars? According to National Geographic, Musk feels that, “The future of humanity is fundamentally going to bifurcate along one of two directions: Either we’re going to become a multiplanet species and a spacefaring civilization, or we’re going be stuck on one planet until some eventual extinction event… For me to be excited and inspired about the future, it’s got to be the first option.”
