Varsity Football played their first game of the season Saturday against Westborough and they did not disappoint. Nashoba came out with a strong win toppling Westborough 35-7. Touchdowns by Kurt Arsenault, Casey Elkins, Sean Pokorney, and Greg Gothie contributed to the win.

“We had a lot of momentum in the beginning of the game, we were looking forward to it [with all] the preparation we had.” Shayne DelFavero stated, a defensive tackle on the team.

Quarterback Drew Schartner threw for 61 yards with 3 completions and compiled 39 yards before Robert Atwood came in as backup. Nashoba scored its initial touchdown with the help of Gothie in the last few minutes of the of the first quarter.

The Chieftains scored their second touchdown on Schartner’s pass to Elkins 40 seconds into the second quarter. Pokorney and Arsenault carried the ball for two touchdown runs increasing the teams lead. Nashoba went into halftime with an impressive 28-0 lead over Westborough.

Opening the second half, Westborough scored their only points of the game by returning the kickoff 85 yards. Pokorney rounded out the score with another short touchdown in the third quarter.

On the defensive side, the Chieftains gave up only 71 yards and two first downs in the whole game.

Following the game, one of Nashoba’s own players had a positive reaction, “We just [wanted] to show the league that Nashoba Chieftain football [was] ready to come play and be physical as a team.” according to Shayne DelFavero. They certainly proved what they wanted to show after their long weeks of practice.
