Girls Soccer Seeks Repeat State Final Appearance

After coming off a loss in the Division 1 state final last year, the Nashoba Girl’s Soccer team is out for the first place title. The girls are currently at a 9-1-1 record for the season, taking their only loss to Wachusett earlier in the season, when the game ended in the 79th minute with a quick goal that set the Mountaineers past the Chieftains. Last week the girls played Acton-Boxboro, one of the most competitive teams they will play this season, and managed to tie at 2-2 with goals from Sophomores Abby McNulty and Brooke English. The girls are currently number 1 in the Mid-Wach B League. The team overall is very strong due to their stats of only allowing 7 goals in and amassing 35 goals against all 10 opponents. Senior captains Grace Keith, Alana Carlucci, Ashlyn Maclure, Sarah Gilloly, and Lilly Hammil have all been great role models on and off the field. The girls officially qualified for the playoffs when they beat Marlborough on October 11th, and are expected to make it far into the post-season.

Reflecting on last season’s State Finals appearance, Senior Captain Grace Keith talks about the team’s outlook on playoffs this season.

“The team is trying to take the season game by game. We don’t won’t to look to far into the future just yet, for fear of overlooking the importance of each individual battle we face. We keep states in the back of our minds as the ultimate goal, but remind each other to focus on the present and improve with each game. We are an extremely optimistic group with a great chemistry. I have a good feeling about the rest of this season.”

Clearly the team has composed thoughts on the rest of the season, they are taking each game one by one as they chase their ultimate goal of a repeat of a state appearance. Despite their chemistry on the field, the players are such good friends off the field which ultimately helps when it comes time to compete together.

In the girls’ 6-1 win against Leominster, freshmen Julia Sidopolous and Alison Gilloly had the opportunity to not only play with the Varsity team but also score their first Varsity goals to help improve their record yet again. Overall the team is pretty evenly spread out between the age levels. The Seniors dominate with 13 players but with the underclassmen combined, the team is fueled by some key Sophomores including goalie Jetta Oskirkl, and Sophmore Left Forward Abby McNulty who both make a great impact on the team despite their young age.

Along with the great season our girl’s soccer team is having on the field, they also won the Fall Sports Membership Contest, which entails picking another fall sports team to host a pizza party for the team. The team has yet to decide what team they will pick. Their next home game is this Saturday at 7 pm, come support the girls as they chase their state title dream by facing rival Algonquin on the turf.
