On September 8, 2025, the Nashoba Varsity Field Hockey team kicked off its season with a 2-0 win against rival school Algonquin Regional. The game, filled with intense moments, showed the importance of skills such as perseverance and communication. “Communication is the key to good passing, and determining if you’re open,” said player number 5, Gabby Palermo. The coaches and spectators could hear the girls talking to each other just as well as the teammates on the field, which indicates a strong, well-bonded team. Without the advice and helpful shouts from teammates, there would have seen many more mistakes and missed opportunities.
Despite the fact that it was a relatively calm and fair game, both head coaches of both teams got carded, which indicates a highly competitive and tense atmosphere. Both coaches handled the cards respectively and went on about the game with no further warnings. A green card was given out by the referee in the second quarter against Nashoba player number 13, Sydney Balewicz. Again, the card was not argued with, and Balewicz calmly stepped off the field to serve her two minutes before she went back on to play exceptionally well for the rest of the game.
Goals scored by Meghan Hourihan (number 3) and Jocelyn Mariani ( number 8) had to be the highlight of the game. With the ball rolling away slowly, inches from the goal line, Hourihan dove to catch it and managed to hit it right in the back of the net with a satisfying bonk. Her teammates helped her back to her feet to hug and celebrate after her heroic point. Later in the game, Mariani scored yet another goal from a powerful shot, yards away from the goal with only a few minutes to spare. The rocket flew from her stick and landed right in the back of the net, which sent the spectators wild.
Overall, Nashoba’s strong performance highlighted by key goals and resilient players, led the Nashoba Girls’ field Hockey team to a significant victory over Algonquin.
