Airbnb, the multi-billion dollar company out of Silicon Valley, announced its plans to start sending customer’s information to the Chinese government.

According to the BBC, the plan is to send any customer information who books with them in China to the government. The data shared will include passport information and dates of the stay.

China has strict regulations on tourism that require citizens and tourists to register their address with the police within 24 hours.  Airbnb will also share the information of the Host with the Chinese government.

The BBC reported that an Airbnb spokesperson explained how the Chinese government has required hotels to send the information for years and how the information they are now going to collect “is similar to information hotels in China have collected for decades”.

The change began on March 30th.
