The National Honor Society is getting bigger and bigger. Seventy seven new members will be inducted on May 17th and will be added to the other 135 deserving and brilliant students from Nashoba Regional High School.

The NHS started in 1921 and is an organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. It serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

It is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. National Honors Society chapters are found in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada.

“The National Honor Society,” confessed Sage Feltus, a senior at Nashoba, “it’s good and it looks great to colleges, but there are so many people in it that it can be very unorganized at times”. Sage said that the NHS, as a great organization, needs more structure. And she’s not the only one complaining.

joHanna Pastorkovich, a senior as well, has been in the NHS since her sophomore year, and knows the organization well enough to say that although the members are of high caliber, they could be doing much more. “The meetings are very short and we just talk and talk about the same things” added Samm Maclean. “Being a member is enriching and is great for your student career, but there’s a lot more that can be done”.

At the same time, though, they all agreed that the National Honors Society keeps its members very involved in the community and gives them guidelines that allow them to live up to certain standards.

To become a member of the National Honor Society, as Mrs. DeCristofaro explained, “it takes a scholarship  (3.2 unweighted average cumulative)  to be invited and then one must apply.  The decision committee (Faculty Council of 5 members) then looks over the applications for leadership and service evidence, but only incoming juniors and seniors are considered”. It seems like a crazy process, but it basically takes commitment and willingness to work hard.

Although there seems to be some controversy about the focus of Nashoba’s National Honors Society and its need for improvement, it is still a great honor recognized throughout the country. Congratulations to all the new members!
