During the winter months, many of us face seasonal depression or just depression in general. Since it’s now spring, here are some things you can do to improve your mental health!
Go for a walk
Many studies have shown that walking for even a short period of time can improve your mental health. Exercise causes your brain to release dopamine and endorphins, which are natural chemicals and hormones that make you feel happy! Walking is also a great low-impact exercise if you have joint or bone problems.
Gardening
Gardening is a great way to get fresh air and grow healthy and fresh foods! Gardening gets you outside and soaking in the vitamin D while also enjoying the warm weather. Some beginner things to garden are tomatoes, lettuce, and cucumbers. Studies have also shown that direct contact with the soil can help your mental and gut health. It does this by linking with our own microbiome, which correlates with our mental health! The microorganisms soak into your skin which in return really helps you!
Outdoor yoga
Outdoor yoga is a great way to practice mindfulness while also getting fresh spring air. You can do this pretty much anywhere, like a park or even your backyard. There are many beginner yoga videos online to help you get started. Meditation and yoga helps reduce stress by releasing tension in your muscles and by releasing endorphins.
Go on a picnic
This warmer weather gives so many great opportunities to be outside, including fun activities like picnics! Whether it’s with friends, family or even your partner, picnics are a great way to spend time with loved ones and enjoy the warm weather! Picnics are also a great way to reduce screen time and just spend time with your favorite people!
Spring cleaning
Spring cleaning is a great way to declutter your house and your mind! Getting rid of extra clutter can help your anxiety and depression by having a clear space and a fresh start. You can donate any unwanted clothes to a donation box or your local thrift store!
