The human body is capable of so many things. Here are some amazing facts about the human body that you probably have never heard.
Fact #1: Your Ears Never Stop Growing
It may sound weird, but cartilage grows differently than bones do. Bones stop growing once a person hits puberty, but cartilage keeps growing, partly due to gravitational pull. Since the nose is made out of cartilage, it also does not stop growing throughout your life.
Fact #2: 60% Of The Human Brain Is Fat
The brain is the organ with the most fat in the human body. This fat provides the nutrients necessary for the brain to function properly.
Fact #3: Only 2% of Humans Have Green Eyes
According to Texaneyecare.com, so little of the population has green eyes due to it being a recessive trait. With recessive traits, an offspring needs to be given the trait for green eyes from both of their parents. It is much rarer because only one dominant trait is needed to mask a recessive trait, but two recessive alleles are needed to show a recessive trait.
Fact #4: When Babies Are Born, They Have Over 300 Bones
It is common knowledge that humans have 206 bones, but that is not true when a person is born. According to Orthopedic Specialty Group, P.C., babies have over 300 bones when they are born; these bones begin to fuse, reducing the amount of bone a person has once they reach adulthood.
Fact #5: There Are 26 Bones In a Human Foot
People might think that the part of the body with the most bones is the ribcage or maybe the skull. This is not true, however; according to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the part of the body with the most bones is the foot. There are 26 bones in each foot, meaning that about 25% of a person’s 206 bones are just in their feet. It is miraculous to think that such a little part of the body holds so many bones.
Fact #6: Both Lungs Are Not The Same Size
One might think that both lungs are the same; however, this is not true. The right lung has three lobes, while the left lung only has two. This is not the only reason why the left lung is smaller than the right one; the left lung has to be smaller to make room for the heart, which is on the left side of the chest.
Fact #7: The Liver Has The Ability To Regenerate Itself
It might sound crazy, but it is possible for 90% of the liver to be removed from the body and for it to regenerate to its original size. According to MD Anderson Cancer Center, this is due to parts of the liver’s ability to compensate for areas without blood flow and grow larger until it can function normally again.
As one could concur from all of these facts, the human body is a marvelous system. This means that you have to treat it as such and take great care of not only your physical well-being but also your mental well-being.
