The NFL season has finally come to a close and the Eagles decimated the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22. The final score doesn’t tell the full story because it was 34-0 in the third quarter at one point. It was an absolute blowout. The Eagles came to play and were ready to beat the Chiefs.
On their first drive, they faced a fourth-and-2 and decided to go for it, a bold strategy but one that was necessary if they were to dethrone KC. Jalen Hurts connected with star WR AJ Brown for 32 yards… but there was a penalty flag on the play.
The refs called pass interference on the play because AJ Brown pushed off the defender’s face mask. This call was extremely questionable, and the Eagles turned the ball over on downs to the Chiefs. The cries of refball could be heard throughout every NFL fan’s home.
In the end, this call would be pretty meaningless but at the time it spelled disaster for the Chief’s hate watchers. In my previous article, I detailed how the Chiefs offense was average for most of the season before a great AFC championship performance. The Chiefs offense was decimated by the Eagle’s defense which had 6 sacks and 2 interceptions with one being returned by rookie cornerback Cooper Dejean.
One surprising thing about this Super Bowl was how the Chief’s defense contained star RB Saquon Barkley to only 25 carries for 52 yards, one of Saquon’s worst performances of the year. I truly believe that if the Chiefs were able to make Jalen Hurts throw the ball more often, he would not be ready for the moment and make mistakes. That was thrown out the window in the third quarter when Jalen threw an absolute dime to Devonta Smith to make the game 34-0.
The Eagle’s defense was what gave the Chiefs the most trouble. As I mentioned, they had 6 sacks and two interceptions but that doesn’t tell the full story. The Eagles didn’t even blitz, sending an extra man to try and sack the QB, against Mahomes once the entire game. Despite the Chief’s offensive line having three all-pro players on it, the injuries they suffered early in the season came back to bite them.
The Chiefs had a bad game plan for this Super Bowl. They only had seven designed run plays the whole game which becomes a problem when the passing game can’t get anything going. Usually, a team will start running the ball more often to open up the passing game eventually but the Chiefs just never did that and that cost them a chance at history.
In the end, Jalen Hurts walked away with Super Bowl MVP which I don’t personally think is deserved because of just how dominant the defense was in the game. I would have given it to Cooper Dejean because of his pick-6 to put the Eagles up 3 scores early in the second quarter.
Despite the Philly mayor’s pleas to the citizens to not destroy the city no matter the result, Philly did exactly what you expected from them. They did listen to the “no climbing the light posts” rule… because they ripped them from the ground and took them crowd surfing. Even if you don’t like seeing this, we can all be happy that Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs lost.
