After this year’s 66th Grammy awards, many deserving artists went home smiling with a shiny award in hand, but some eligible artists left empty handed, and some didn’t even receive a nomination. Let’s take a look at the artists that got left out this year.
The first artist that definitely got left out this year was Noah Kahan. Kahan was nominated for best new artist, but lost to Victoria Monet. If only there could have been two winners, because Kahan deserved the spotlight. He gained fame with the release of his hit song “stick season” about the transitions of seasons in Vermont, and the loneliness that comes with it. Other songs like “Northern Attitude” and “All my love” gained recognition as well, and millions of people around the world connected with his heartfelt lyrics and guitar melodies. He has collaborated with artists like Hozier, Lizzy McAlpine, and Gracie Abrams, and has gained over 5 billion streams. He made the perfect candidate for a best new artist award, and many were disappointed that he went home empty handed. The bright side is that Kahan’s career is only going up from here, so let’s hope that his name shows up in more nominations in the future.
Secondly, another artist who got left out at the Grammys this year was popstar Tate McRae, who surprisingly didn’t receive any nominations. McRae is a 20 year old who grew up in Calgary, Canada and was a competitive dancer from a young age, competing on shows like “So you think You can dance?” and was a backup dancer on Justin Beiber’s “Purpose” tour. She started posting videos on youtube of her singing original songs, and soon enough gained many viewers and followers. She started releasing music on streaming platforms in her early teens, and has been ever since. She has 2 studio albums, an EP, and has collaborated with artists such as Khalid and Troye Sivan. Her hit single “You broke me first” threw her into the spotlight and has over 1.3 billion streams on spotify. After that single, she came out with her first album, “I used to think I could fly” which contained another hit song “She’s All I Wanna Be.” Most recently she released her single “Greedy” along with her album “Think Later.” “Greedy” gained #1 status on billboard’s top 100 songs, and on Canadian Hot 100. Unfortunately, because her album was released outside of the eligibility period, she wouldn’t be able to be nominated for awards like “best new artist.” McRae is going on her second tour this year, and has a bright future ahead of her. Her album was released within the eligibility period for the 67th annual Grammy awards, hopefully we’ll see Tate at the 2025 Grammys!
Finally, an artist that was majorly snubbed at the Grammys this year was Olivia Rodrigo. With the release of her sophomore album “Guts” and her hit song “Vampire,” Rodrigo had plenty to be eligible for, and that certainly showed in her nominations. Rodrigo was nominated for 6 awards, but went home empty handed. 21 year old Rodrigo won 3 Grammys, all at the 2023 Grammy Awards, but many were expecting her to win some categories this year too. For example, her song “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl” got nominated for best rock song, but she lost to “Not Strong Enough” by Boygenius. Her song “Vampire” also lost to Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers” for best pop vocal performance, and the same two songs competed for record of the year, but “Flowers” took the cake once again. Although “Flowers” was a breakout hit, so was “Vampire.” Instead of giving Miley both awards, the recording academy should have given one to Olivia, because the lyrics, instrumentals, and stellar vocals of “Vampire” are just show-stopping. Rodrigo is just beginning her tour for her album “Guts,” and isn’t planning to stop making music anytime soon, so we can expect to see the star at future Grammy ceremonies, maybe next time walking out with an award
