Football has been around for over 60 years. We have seen many dynasties in the history of the NFL from teams like Dallas, San Francisco, New England, and Pittsburgh. Now, there’s a new team joining the legendary club.
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, February 11th in Las Vegas, Nevada for Super Bowl 58. The final score was 25-22 after Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs completed the comeback victory in only the second overtime game in Super Bowl history. This victory gave the Chiefs the title of back-to-back champions, the first time we’ve heard this phrase since the New England Patriots won 2 consecutive Super Bowls from 2003-2004. This is Mahomes’ third overall Super Bowl and third Super Bowl MVP. Now comes the real question: are the Chiefs an official dynasty now?
Dynasties in football are usually highlighted by 3 or more Super Bowl titles in a short (or long) span of time. These usually last from 3-10 years, with an exception for New England (their dynasty lasted from 2001-2019, essentially 2 dynasties in 1). Kansas City’s fourth overall Super Bowl win was their third in 5 years. The first one in this trio of Super Bowls came from Super Bowl 54 in 2020 when they defeated the San Francisco 49ers. Their second came last year when they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57 and their third came this year as previously mentioned. They have solidified themselves in NFL history with this third Super Bowl win in 5 years. No other team has been as dominant than them in this span of time as their record outweighs all other teams at 63-20. Many would give most of the credit to Mahomes and Kelce. While they have been key pieces in their success, Head Coach Andy Reid has also played a big role in their dynasty. While he may not be recognized as highly as Bill Belichick or Don Shula, he built this team and brought home 3 championships (and counting?).
What makes football fans most upset about this is the success they’re having. No one but the fan base of the certain team likes this. The major success of the New England Patriots was ripped apart for years by fans and media because they didn’t like it. It looks like we’re seeing that again with the Chiefs as the hate train has already started. The most impressive part about this is that their success has continued over years, not just a one and done season.
Tom Brady and the Patriots handed over the torch to the Chiefs in 2019. This new dynasty has opened up a new light into the NFL and shows that the new era of football is upon us. Teams like the Patriots and Cowboys are in the past. The future is here and the Kansas City Chiefs are the new villains of the NFL. Whether you think the NFL is scripted or you just don’t like it, we have to face it: the Chiefs are a dynasty and they’re probably not done yet.
