On February 11th, the Kansas City Chiefs received their first Super Bowl victory in 19 years, in a highly anticipated game with an overtime finish that had everyone on the edge of their seats. The final score ended in 25-22. The 49ers could only score a field goal in overtime, putting them ahead 22-19. Jake Moody scored the 27-yard field goal that put the 49ers ahead in early overtime but their defense was overwhelmed allowing the Chiefs to respond with a 13-play, 75-yard drive to win it on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to Mecole Hardman. This drive was the most intense part of the game.
Before overtime, The Chiefs were behind 19-16 with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter when they gained 75 yards in 11 plays and Harrison Butker kicked a 29-yard field goal which allowed for the game to go into overtime. The key play of this quarter was at 16 seconds left when Mahomes threw a 22-yard crosser to Kelce which put them in field goal range. This game was the 4th Super Bowl victory for the Chiefs franchise and the 3rd under the team’s coach Andy Reid which ties him for 3rd most all-time. This game was Patrick Mahomes’s 3rd Super Bowl MVP with 333 passing yards making him the 3rd quarterback ever to win 3 Super Bowl MVP awards. An announcer stated that the Chiefs were the underdogs in the last 3 games of the postseason following Mahomes stating, “Just know that the Kansas City Chiefs are never underdogs. Just know that.” Travis Kelce followed this statement with, “We couldn’t have gotten here without having that target on our back all year. Now we can do it three times in a row.” This was a very detrimental loss for the 49ers as they were far ahead of the Chiefs for the majority of the game. It looked like they had this Super Bowl won from the very beginning up until the very end. San Francisco’s championship drought is now 29 seasons in. The last Super Bowl champion to successfully defend its title was the 2004 Patriots, which further shows the Chiefs cementing their place as one of the most formidable teams in the league.
The 49ers led very easily in the first half, with their pressing defense leaving Mahomes scrambling. The first quarter ended with The Chiefs finishing with just 16 yards compared to the 125 for San Francisco. It was looking good for the 49ers at this time, with their coordination and unbreakable defense dominating the Chiefs. Leading into the second quarter the 49ers kicker Moody scored a 55-yard field goal, the farthest in Super Bowl history, being the first point of the game putting the 49ers ahead 3-0. Following this, San Francisco got creative with their play-making, going 67 yards into the end zone to earn the first touchdown of the game with wide receiver Jauan Jennings making a 21-yard throw to McCaffery putting them up 10-0. The 49ers defense refused to let up, sacking Mahomes twice and forcing him to make rushed throws. After almost 30 minutes in this game, the Chiefs were able to secure a couple of points from a 28-yard field goal from Harrison Butker. This concluded the second half with a 10-3 score.
The 3rd quarter was when things intensified, The Chiefs were able to score as Mahomes began to dominate the 49er’s defense with plays they were unable to stop. San Francisco was held scoreless for the duration of the 3rd quarter but Brock Purdy was able to lead the team down the Chiefs 42-yard line to wrap up this quarter. The Chiefs led 13-10. San Francisco scored a touchdown to start the 4th quarter, but the Chiefs were quick to respond. Mahomes and Kelce made numerous plays to gain many yards allowing for a field goal. This tied the score which only made the game that much more intense. San Francisco followed with a scoring drive that allowed for a field goal putting them up 3 points nearing the end of the game. With less than 2 minutes left and only two timeouts to spare the Chiefs were able to gain enough yards to make a field goal putting the game into overtime for the first time since 2017. In overtime, the San Francisco 49er’s were only able to gain enough yards to allow for a field goal, while the Chiefs scored a touchdown on their final drive which ended the game.
This was undoubtedly one of the most intense Super Bowls we have seen with numerous shocking plays that left the record-breaking amount of viewers curious about what would happen next. Super Bowl 58 was certainly one for the books, and allowed for Mahomes to achieve another MVP award.
