Candy, freights and fun fill the air on Halloween night. Children all over the world look forward to this holiday to be able to live out their wildest dreams. When I was a youngster, I would pick out my costume months in advance. Not only was I an excellent judge of costume, but a chronic outfit repeater. I wore the same Captain America costume three years in a row. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Some of my friends have come to me to ask for costume recommendations. I thought that I might share them with the rest of the world.
- Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy:
Spongebob Squarepants is one of the most popular children’s television shows of all time, creating many iconic characters. One of my favorite duos from the show is Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. They embody the essence of fun and friendship. But the costumes are easy to obtain as well. All that you’ll need for Mermaid Man is a long-sleeved orange shirt and green shorts. Don’t forget a purple seashell brassiere, purple belt with a giant M on it, green leggings, green gloves, and purple face paint to equip yourself with his signature starfish mask.
Barnacle Boy is a simpler outfit, for those who are not looking to be covered in tights from head to toe. The costume consists of navy blue shorts, a long-sleeved red shirt, a blue handkerchief to wear as a small cape, goggles, a white sailor cap, blue gloves, and flippers. This costume is easy to execute, and insanely recognizable. This outfit is on my list as well.
- Plankton and Mr. Krabs
For dynamic frenemies, who are not always on the best of terms, the classic duo of Plankton and Mr. Krabs is an excellent pick. For the maniacal person in the duo, Plankton is the perfect fit. All that you need to execute this ensemble is a deep blue-green morph suit, some cardboard, and black, red, and yellow paint. There is some DIY required for this costume, in the form of crafting the eye and eyebrow of the sea creature. To start on the craft, cut the cardboard piece into a circle with a bar on top of it. Take your paint and brushes, and paint the circle with the yellow paint as a base coat. Paint a smaller red circle in the center of the yellow circle to form the pupil of the eye. Paint a black bar on the top of the cardboard piece to form the eyebrow. To enhance your eye you might want to take a piece of string or a popsicle stick to hold the eye up. I will advise you that if you make this eye, you might not be able to see while trick-or-treating. Enjoy your new Halloween costume.
Mr. Krabs is an equally difficult outfit to execute, but just as rewarding as the previous one. The materials needed for this look are a red morph suit, jean shorts, a white t-shirt, a blue button-up short-sleeved shirt, red crab hands, some cardboard, a headband, hot glue, and mint and black paint. For the DIY involved with this costume, take the cardboard and cut it into long oval-like shapes to form the eyes. Paint the eyes with the mint paint, and once that dries, take black paint and make smaller circles to form the pupil. Glue the eyes to the headband, to have the proper look. Cut a hole in the face of the morph suit for the mouth, and so you can breathe!
I hope that these nautical outfits are a great inspiration for your fun-filled Halloween night, but more importantly, stay safe!
