The new game will take place after the latest game, God of War(2018), this game and the 2018 God of War, are the only two  games of the franchise that are about Norse mythology, while all other ones focus on Greek mythology.

Background on God of War

The God of War franchise has been going for 17 years. The first game was released in 2005 and focused on  Greek mythology. The plot focused on Kratos, the spartan warrior. He was furious like no one else, being one of the greatest spartan warriors, later it turns out that he is a demi-god, son of Callisto who was one of Zeus’s many lovers, and he was turned into a god. 

During his time as a Spartan warrior, he accidentally killed his family(wife, and daughter) due to the trickery of his former mentor Ares, the God of War. He later gets revenge, killing his former mentor Ares, and turning into the God of War. As the temple burned, while Kratos accidentally killed his family, a village oracle cursed Kratos condemning him to wear the “mark of his terrible deed,” which was the Ashes of his family, that turned his skin pale white.  This is what earned him the title of “ghost of Sparta.  After Kratos turned into a god, Zeus was afraid that Kratos would take over his father’s throne, just like Zeus did to his father Cronus, so Zeus weakened Kratos and tricked him into abandoning his powers into the Blade of Olympus. He then used the blade to kill Kratos. Although he overcame all obstacles, Kratos was stunned at Zeus’s betrayal and swore revenge on Zeus as he died. Kratos is virtually immortal, as he was born a demi-god and turned into a god, but later on when he was cursed because of his sins, he was also cursed to never be able to die, so he survived and came back from the underworld. He destroys Mt. Olympus, and most of the gods, and almost all of the mortals in Greece died. After the world reverted to Chaos, Kratos killed Zeus, and achieved his revenge. 

The 2018 release of the God of War 4, begins with Kratos cutting down a tree, and then he carries it to a boat, but there is one thing different, there is a boy with him, not so young, around 13-14 years old I would say. It turns out that the tree was going to be used to burn his dead wife’s body. A little bit later, a strange man knocks on their door, Kratos tells his son, Atreus, to hide. Kratos opens the door, and the man starts talking. Soon after they fight, but the man seems incredibly powerful even for Kratos. After that, the man goes away, so Kratos and Atreus go on a journey to spread Kratos’s wife’s ashes. A lot of things happen, but I won’t tell you all of the story.

The game was released on November 9th, 2022.
